There will be musicians and dancers all around performing. There will be stages set up all around performing various things such as Bomba and plena which are traditional Afro-Puerto Rican musical genres that hold significant cultural and historical importance on the island. There are other performances such as dancing troupes, theater groups and poets. The street vendors offer traditional Puerto Rican dishes such as alcapurrias, and empanadillas. You can also enjoy tropical drinks, including piña coladas and medallas (Puerto Rican beer) as you enjoy the festival. The festivities aren't the only thing that is happening during San Sebastian; it still holds some of its religious roots. They hold a mass for San Sebastian and cultural exhibits and activities to help educate visitors about Puerto Rican traditions and history. The festival attracts locals and tourists alike, creating a lively atmosphere of celebration and togetherness. Many families, artists, and performers view it as an opportunity to preserve and share the culture. In essence, the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián is a vibrant celebration of Puerto Rican culture, history, and community. With its colorful traditions, lively music, delicious food, and rich heritage, it offers an unforgettable experience that unites locals and visitors in the joyous spirit of the island.
This vibrant festival marks the end of the holiday season on the island and is a showcase of Puerto Rican culture, traditions, and community spirit. The festival takes place in mid January and lasts only four days. Luckily it takes place in Old San Juan which is in close proximity to the Somos. It would just be a short fifteen minute drive to the center of the festivities or a thirty minute ride using transit. The festival has its origins in the mid-20th century when a parish priest, José María Madrazo, organized the event to raise funds for the church and revive the community's spirit. This turned into much more as it is now a massive cultural and artistic celebration. Once you get there you will see a lot of colorful and amazing things but one thing that pops out the most are the vejigantes cabuzudoz masks which are these beautifully sculpted masks that shout with color. The vejigante masks are tied to Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage, representing the colorful vejigante characters rooted in Spanish, African, and Taíno traditions. Originally symbolizing the fight between good and evil, today they celebrate artistry, creativity, and Puerto Rican identity, adding vibrant energy and playful chaos to the festival. The cabuzudoz represent well-known historical, cultural, or folkloric characters, often exaggerated for humor or symbolic significance. The festival is also a great way for the locals to show off their creativity while honoring their beautiful heritage.
Streets can get very crowded, so arrive early to secure good spots for parades or performances.
January in Puerto Rico can still be warm, so drink water alongside festive beverages.
Parking in Old San Juan is limited during the event.
